The Importance of Using UV Protective Glass For Custom Framing - The Benefits Outweigh The Cost

The importance of using UV protective glass was discussed in a post on a FaceBook Page by Cindy's Custom Framing & Antique Art. The same article also appeared on Tumblr and on Google+. This article is worth re-visiting because the damage that can occur as a result of Ultraviolet Light is real. Also, because the damage inflicted by unwanted UV light is avoidable and worth reading about.

"Helping You See The Light While Protecting Your Art From Light Damage!

A critical element in the process of conservation-grade framing involves installing UV protective glass or acrylic over the items framed. Typically art will fade in a very short time if not protected against ultraviolet light. We only use 99% UV protective glass and acrylic on all of our framing projects. This illustration shows how UV light is blocked by protective glass.

If your art is not protected, yellowing and fading can result in a short time—often in less than a year. The magnitude of the damage caused by UV light is dependent upon the exposure to UV light sources. For example, art hung in direct sunlight will show the effects of UV damage much sooner than art hidden away in a dark closet.

A note of caution: sunlight is not the only dangerous source of UV light. A light source that we consider as innocuous as overhead fluorescent lights also emits harmful UV light. Fluorescent lights will damage your art.

If you’re unsure about the protection afforded to your framed art by sources other than us, we invite you to contact us with your concerns. We are located at 10070 Ford Avenue, Richmond Hill, Georgia 31324.Our phone number is a 912- 756-2781.

We’ve also written a comprehensive guide to selecting a custom framer on our companion website—Framed Guidons. It is on a page titled, “Guide To Quality Custom Military Framing” and it provides additional illustrations and suggestions for protecting art and items framed. Please contact us and we’ll be glad to address any concerns that you have regarding UV protection for your art."

Protecting art against deterioration caused by unwanted damaging ultraviolet light is especially important if the art, documents, or the items framed hold significant intrinsic value, or sentimental value. For example, no one wants to watch a signed autographed document that cost thousands of dollars fade away in value because it wasn't protected against unwanted UV light.

Protecting against unwanted UV light is only one of the steps that a good, quality, conservation grade picture framer will employ to safeguard documents. A great page to get information about selecting a custom quality picture framer is on the page http://framedguidons.com/custom-frames/guide-to-quality-custom-military-framing/ . This page is dedicated to helping people select a custom framer for their military framing needs. Protecting articles such as military memorabilia often involves framing documents in a shadow box. It would be a shame to watch these documents fade away because they were not protected properly. There is a wealth of information directed toward customers interested in acquiring military framing services on the website titled, Framed Guidons.
